Overview

FamilyAssets helps families in the United States find assisted living, memory care and home care providers. I was the main front-end developer on it, at SilverAssist, working with other developers on the Next.js App Router.

It serves tens of thousands of state, city and community pages that are generated from data. Each page merges two sources when it renders: headless WordPress, through GraphQL, for the editorial content, and a REST API for the live listings.

The challenge

A directory this size has to stay fast and be fully indexable, because search is how families arrive. That means pages that are cheap to serve, content that updates without a rebuild, and structured data that search engines can read, for tens of thousands of routes.

Key features

  • City pages with filters: the communities near a city, sorted by distance, rating or price, with filters for amenities and care types. These are the core of the directory.
  • Resources from WordPress: the articles and guides are written in WordPress, and the Next.js site reads them through GraphQL.
  • Two sources on every page: WordPress content over GraphQL and live listings over REST, merged at render time.
  • Server Components and ISR over a Redis cache layer, so generated pages are served from cache and refreshed in the background.
  • On-demand revalidation from WordPress: when an editor publishes, the affected pages are refreshed without a deploy.
  • Schema.org structured data and per-route metadata on every page.

Technologies used

  • Front end: Next.js (App Router), React, Server Components, TypeScript.
  • Content and data: headless WordPress with WPGraphQL, a REST API for listings.
  • Caching and infrastructure: ISR with Redis, on AWS.
